If you've read through the information on our "Home" page, you were given a brief introduction to the phrase "Farming By Design." At Canfield Family Farm, it simply describes our intentional desire and effort to operate our farm in partnership with the natural God-given life-giving processes already at work around us in the soil and air. As Christians, it is part of our stewardship of God's resources.

All of us, whether we realize it or not, are totally dependent upon the silent and unseen workings in the natural world to produce for us, from the soil, the foods we all depend upon each day for life and health. We often refer to the processes that accomplish this using terms like photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient recycling. However, we believe that from the beginning of time, the living God revealed in the Bible, our creator and sustainer, has intentionally authored and been continually managing all of these systems in the air, soil, and organisms therein to bring forth new life from the earth's soil out of the remains of the old, which eventually becomes our food either through plants or animals.
Modern food production for too long has been settling for short-term gains at the expense of long-term health and regeneration. "Cheap" food rather than quality food has become the inevitable result. At Canfield Family Farm, we are determined to reverse this course and produce the quality of foods that people truly need to establish and maintain proper health. While we can't control what others do, we are committed to managing our own small corner of this world in a more God-honoring and responsible manner. While modern farming tools and practices have made it easier for mankind to produce increasingly larger quantities of food faster and with far less labor, it has been increasingly coming at the expense of reduced nutritional quality in our food and an inevitable decline in our own collective human health. In the natural world of plants and animals, there are no shortcuts that can create the highly nutritious food that we desire and need. There is still no substitute for allowing food to be produced within the natural boundaries of the cycles established by God. Today, however, we often resort to artificial methods and stimulants to try and achieve what simply cannot be authentically achieved, a quality food product, without expending the true costs in time and other resources needed to produce it.
